Critical “Essay”

Posted by: redsmc on: September 25, 2008

What website do most people look at to connect with their friends, meet new people and express themselves?  One of the most popular websites is myspace.com.  This website is available to anyone, free of charge, to create their own page on the Internet.  With over two hundred million users, a lot of different voices are heard all around the world.

Before you even log in to your home page, you see the main MySpace website.  This is where they have large ads covering with page with bright images and videos.  Everyone has to see this page before they log in to their personal page.  That means millions of people see these ads everyday.  The ad that is on the page now is for MySpace music.  They have a video on the right had side to show all the different artists that are on MySpace.  From Nelly to Iggy Pop, you can find their personal page on MySpace and interact with them.

Why place ads all over the main home page for MySpace?  Million of people have to look at these ads before logging on.  Out of the millions of people that look at this page, someone is going to be interested in the product and may even buy the product.  The ads are constantly changing; sometimes they change everyday.   For the loyal costumers of MySpace,  they are helping other companies by looking at their ads and buying their products.

Yes, this is very true. Ads are all over myspace, and making an impact on some people. But also, ads are all over the place. For example, in news websites, various other websites…
I wonder if people pay attention to it more or just ignore it?

I have to agree with this article. Although I must say that I think that MySpace doesn’t just have ads to sell products but also to entice new viewers as well as maintain a stronghold over regular everyday users. It’s smart to have the ads constantly changing considering that MySpace users have a wide array of interests have need to be catered to. And, even after a person logs in…if you notice carefully certain ads will appear on the banner that cater for to your specific needs. For example, when I log into my MySpace account often times I will see ads for subscriptions to fashion magazines or tickets to rock concerts, which coincidentally happens to relate to some of my interests. I really like how you mentioned the fact that places like MySpace have ads which try to touch on the “personal” likes of a viewer.

I agree that log-in pages often display upcoming entertainment-based events, as well as self-image ideologies. Unfortunately myspace has to make money and advertising space is the quickest means to an end.
